nasal steroids

Categories: Allergic Asthma

Question:

: Before taking, I recommend you ask your doctor about this if you are a : glaucoma suspect, or have higher than normal interocular pressure. … and furthermore, anybody worried about glaucoma might want to consider regular visits to their opthamologist (they are not just for those of us who wear glasses).  I don’t know if the local GP has equipment to test interocular pressure, but your typical opthamologist has, and does do this routinely (in Australia, in any case). I’m currently using Vancenase AQ 84 mcg.  It works well for me, however, I have had problems with nasal bleeding due to irritation.  (Not a full nose bleed, but just blood on a tissue when I blow my nose.)  What my doctor has me do is to take a cotton swab with an antibiotic ointment (i.e. Neosporin) and coat the inner walls of my nostils (not real deep) before using the spray.  He says it creates a protective barrier.  So far, so good. I have been using Flixonase ( fluticasone propionate ) for over a year and find it very helpful with no noticable side effects. The pack insert warns  users to contact a doctor in the following cases:- Nose bleed,  rash , swelling of face or tongue none of this has happened to me denis

Note, there seems to be a correlation between steroid use and high interocular pressure, which is possibly linked with glaucoma. Yes, I am talking about the inhaled steroids for the sinuses and the treatment of asthma. Before taking, I recommend you ask your doctor about this if you are a glaucoma suspect, or have higher than normal interocular pressure. Brian Moffet — Brian. D. Moffet, speaking for myself. I’ve been using Beconase (most of the time) for more than two years and have had no ill effects whatever. It does help a lot, but it takes a few days to begin to experience the improvement. You might also ask her about Nasalcrom (cromolyn) for allergy seasons. It does something different and has an additive effect to the Beconase. Nasalcrom is not over-the-counter, but it is somewhat pricey — about $15.00 for a bottle. Good luck.

Well, I take a beclomethasone nasal inhaler 6 times daily. It’s preetty much the same as beconase. It works well, but it does give me some side affects that I have to see my doctor about. Taking it sort of burns the inside of my nose for a few minutes, it’s unpleasant, but not unbearable and the feeing goes ina few minuted. It’s OK. I’ve been on it for only about 3 weeks and I have been getting a large amount of nose bleeds since. I don’t know if it’s related yet, i’m still working it out. I used to be on Nasonex, and it was much better – didn’t burn, no nose bleeds, but my doc. changed my meds to try out this new one. I think I will probably go back to Nasonex, although the beclomethasone inhaler is more affective. I’d give it a try for a month – It can’t hurt (too much!) David FitzGerald. Uni of Birmingham.

I use Vancenase AQ, a beclomethasone nasal spray. The last batch I got was the Double Strength version. I use it as needed, which seems to work in my case; it opens up the swollen nasal passages; asthmatics are supposed to breath thru their noses to warm, filter, and humidify the air. Most doctors recommend the steroid nasal sprays be used on a continuous basis, typically 1 or 2 sniffs in each nostril twice a day. Be careful to direct the spray away from the septum. Steroid nasal sprays are now the treatment of choice for most cases of allergic rhinitis (hayfever); safe at low dosage. I use Vanenase Its got no side effects I notice and its been a constant chest colds to almost none…I’m a believer

Response:

I used Nazacort for a while.  It seemed to help a little, with no visible side effects.  OTOH, I stopped taking it, and didn’t notice things worsen (NOTE:  see your doctor before starting or stopping any medication!).   If you want some better data than just personal experience, often there’s a little pamplet in with the box that explains how the medication was tested, and the side effects vs. a placebo medication.  That’s what I tend to find convincing (athough the idea of shoving a drug up your nose definitely has some cultrual history to it…) Scott T."hanks for asking…you can’t be too careful."
