Ozone dangers
Question:
I thought you might be interested in knowing the in an associated press release IN WASHINGTON that was in the paper, "the environmental protection agency is considering tougher air quality rules that could compel many cities to begin new smog controls. The proposal, expected within days, has been the focus fo much lobbying from both environmentalists and busines groups. They disagree whether the current air problem rules are adequate to protect americans’ health. If the EPA reduces the allowed levels of smog-causing ozone and microscoopic dust in the air, states and cities might have to impose draconian pollution controls, including travel restrictions, wider use of clean-burning gasoline, mandatory car pooling, construction caps and curbs on the use of everything from pleasure boats to lawn mowers, opponents say. The proposal could cost "many billions of dollars" and more than triple the ares unable to meet federal standards, argues Alan Charles Rawls, an attorney representing the American Automobile Manufacturers Yet, many health experts argue that even comunities meeting the current federal standards have air that is harmful to children, the elderly, and those with lung problems such as asthma. The federal standards are not doing the job in protecting the public health, especially among children and the elderly with chronic heart and lung diseases, said Ronald White of the American Lung Association, which , through a lawsuit, forced EPA "Ozone-What it is: A major component of smog, formed when nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons combine in the presence of sunlight. Current limit .12 parts per million cube feet of air. Possible future limit .08 parts per million Particulates-What they are: Tiny matter suspended in the air, inclduing dust and soot from farming, roads, and construction. Currently: EPA regulates only particles of 10 microns in diameter Possible future: may being regulating particles of 2.5 microns in diameter. Why they’re dangerous-Ozone and particulates in the air have been linked to increased respiratory aliments, asthma attacks, allergies, and increased likelihood of premature death."

Reply: I haven’t been in this newsgroup before but I do know what ozone is. Ozone is a trivient of oxygen, O3. Oxygen is O2. Quote From "Is This Your Child’s World?" by Dr Doris J. Rapp, Allergist "One important note about ozone: The EPA and OSHA consider ozone to be a toxic and hazardous gas if it is inhaled for prolonged periods, even though to my knowlege no human death has ever been recorded due to overexposure. This warning is somewhat perplexing because these agencies have not made similar proclamations about substances definitely known to be harmful to animals and/or humans. In addition, the Maryland Technical Bulletin regarding HVAC for schools does NOT recommend ozone generators for use in classrooms." Ozone is not the cause of the problem but is natures way of clearing the air of the pollutants we put in it. For example, going to the mountains for good air to improve one’s health puts onr in an environment laden with naturally-produced ozone. The same holds true for walking in a heavily forested area. The natural off gassing from plant life produces "pollution" that triggers ozone careation from the sun’s ultraviolet light, the pollution is then eaten or burned by that "activated" oxygen and then the ozone diminishes naturally. This process also occus in an urban environment that is impure with hydrocarbons, cyanides, nitrous oxides and many additional smog contributors. When one hears the ozone count for a city, one must really understand what the person is saying. It costs about $1 to test for atmospheric ozone and about $40 to test for each chemical componant of smog. Out of sheer economics the ozone test is used, and ozone got a bad name. They know that if the ozone count is up than the pollutant concentration is up also. An ozone count is just the accepted way to measure level of pollutants in an area. Ozone is not a pollutant. It is nature’s way of dealing with pollutants. In its natural concentration it is healthy, in fact its a gas essential for life, it cleans our air. — Eric Carlson Carlson Indoor Air Solutions web page: http://maplecity.com/~pureair/
