I was wandering what they do to test you for asthma??  i am going to set up a appointment for my self to see my dr to see if she can test me.  please let me know     liza

A history is taken, of symptoms [wheezing, coughing, mucus?],  allergies like hay fever, family members with asthma,  childhood asthma. The basic test is a lung function test using a spirometer to measure and plot the air flow from your lungs. A bronchodilator is then administered and the test repeated. A significant increase in lung function tends to support an asthma diagnosis, since asthma is a reversible disease. Your doctor might also try a trial dose of albuterol/salbutamol to see if it helps. More complicated cases may need more extensive testing, such as a methacholine challenge. Most GPs will treat mild to moderate asthma by trying different drugs; and may not have a spirometer. If you do have allergies, this improves the chances of a referral to an allergist. An allergist can give skin tests to determine allergies. Ellis
