My romance with oatmeal.
Question:
I was diagnosed in November l999, For all this time I believed that oatmeal has been a high carb food, one to avoid, When I did have it I would eat half a portion, Well as much of us are having the winter of hell, I decided to have a full portion of oatmeal as my starch, The box says 24 carbs with six fiber making it 18. Today I had a bowl of oatmeal, half a protein bar wit 6 carbs and one slice cheese and turkey salami, I was 81 before eating and two hours later I was 94, I find that incredible, Usually the rise is under ten points but I think I hit on what works for me, It warms my innards, aids in control of cholesterol, is filling for a while and thats why I eat protein with it and keeps my numbers in great control. I just realized I was a little higher than usual because I put some blueberries in it. Have any of you had this experience with oatmeal. Could this be a fluke or does it not raise bgs as I had been thinking for the last three years, Loretta In tribute to the United States of America and the State of Israel, two bastions of strength in a world filled with strife and terrorism.

IIRC, your control has improved quite a bit in the last few years. When your control improves, moderate-carb foods tend not to spike you the way they do when you’re in poor control. Somebody who was just diagnosed (and is therefore probably experiencing glucotoxicity) would probably spike badly from that same amount of oatmeal. Also, not all oatmeals are equivalent: instant oatmeal is more likely to cause a spike than the kind that needs to be cooked for a long time.
Response:
Yes I can eat oatmeal and it doesn’t raise my sugar anymore than it is supposed to.I eat 1/2 a cup for breakfast.
Response:
Loretta, I don’t care too much for oatmeal, so I can’t help you out there. But I agree this is the winter of hell. I’m ready for it to be over. Today instead of my treadmill, I shoveled snow. I have to be really careful of the cold because I have asthma. We usually don’t bother to shovel a couple inches but I wanted to clear the driveway because it’s supposed to snow again on Sunday and I didn’t want snow on top of ice. And the long term forecast says more snow the end of next week. I want spring! — Best wishes Louise Type 2, controlling by diet and exercise

I eat lots of oatmeal but use it in soups and stews. I have also found that if I eat fat with carbs as you did with the cheese and salami, that my three hour reading is often higher than the two hour reading. Dolores

Could this be a fluke or does it not raise bgs as I had been thinking for the last three years, Loretta I have eaten a bowl of oatmeal (the slow-cook kind) almost every morning for the past 11 years. . .for the same reasons you do, a filling, anti-cholesterol breakfast. Speaking as your friendly T1, a lab rat for testing the G.I. of foods, I can testify that oatmeal does indeed spike one mightily. I jump through bG control hoops in order to eat my daily oatmeal. . .shooting extra insulin, shooting early, and striving to exercise after the meal. Mostly I succeed, sometimes everything goes to pot. I will spike into the 200 range any time I skip some of the essentials. Regards Old Al

Of course, you have to eat the same total amount of food, say 1/2 or 1 C of the mixture, not just add it to what yu already eat:-) Anyone have information or experience with this mixture and if so , how much oat bran to oatmeal? For me, 1 C for breakfast , of slow cooked oatmeal is fine if I am going to school, therefore taking a 3/4 mile walk shortly afte breakfast. Wendy Baker

G’day G’day Loretta, Eric et al, It is hard to improve on such a sensible answer that I shan’t try to. Perhaps I could add a few comments. Oatmeal has a GI about 55 on the glucose = 100 scale, so one gets a better safety margin than say with white bread = 70. >Also, not all oatmeals are equivalent: instant oatmeal is more likely to >cause a spike than the kind that needs to be cooked for a long time.
Basically rolled oats are likely to be a better proposition than milled oats. — Quentin Grady ^ ^ / New Zealand, >#,#< [ / / "… and the blind dog was leading." http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/quentin

Loretta I think it is much like everything else. We all respond differently. I cant eat any kind of oatmeal, at any time of the day. However I can eat the same carb count worth of wheat thins and it does very little to me. Go figure! As always YMMV and this is JMO Jeanne Type 2 Diagnosed 05/28/02 189/159/120

I love oatmeal – but I can hardly be in the room with it. I recently tried it when I knew I would be active (moderately) after and it spiked me into the 200’s. I miss it a lot. Diana in Sacramento, CA Dx since Feb 2001

Does oatmeal raise sugars that much? I’m type1 and have a large bowl of oatmeal with milk and oj every morning – with sugars always staying steady. This has become my most controlled meal. Well, apparently it works for you. Wouldn’t work for me! Especially the orange juice. But we’re all different. — Type 2 http://users.bestweb.net/~jbove/ Julie Bove, posting from new account

It’s definitely a YMMV situation. Note also that different kinds of oatmeal tend to have different effects on blood sugar, with the instant kind tending to raise it the most and the steel-cut kind (that takes half an hour to cook) tending to raise it the least. It’s probably more problematic for T2s than T1s, because around breakfast time the typical T2’s liver has trouble stopping glucose production, a problem most T1s don’t have. Therefore T2s get hit harder.

Especially not with OJ (something else I dearly miss). I have trouble with breakfast spikes. I am a type 2 however and I know everyone is different. I remember someone saying they could eat cereal, but not milk. I have much less problem with milk. Go figure. Diana in Sacramento Dx type 2 Feb 2001

The brands such as Quick Oats (Quaker Oats, Canada) have glycemic index of 66 and with a nominal serving size of 250 grams, have a glycemic load of 17. Oatmeal from rolled oats from 8 studies has glycemic load of 13. One of the brands in that average had a glycemic load of 9. The latter one must have been courser than the other brands. You can slow down the digestion of most cereal by adding some psylium husks to it. This would lower the maximum of the bg response from cereal. Frank Roy

Same here I never have any problem with Oatmeal at all.

Hi Mack I also eat oatmeal almost every morning, and my car ratio is 12:1. 12 Carb = 1 Unit of Novolog. Although you asked the question of someone else, my latest Hb1Ac was 5.8. That was taken in December. Bob
